It seems that credit unions are in the lead.
Alliant Credit Union has a 2.10% APY for a 1-year Certificate of Deposit. The rate is actually good from 1-year to 23-months. Interest is paid at maturity only. 5-star Rating.
Melrose Credit Union out of New York has a 2.07% rate.
Amazingly, I found a bank with a 2.00%. Most banks are in the 1.50% range because of the FDIC National rate cap. Check out First City Bank. 2.00% APY. They can be reached at 888-244-5151. Of course there are a couple of caveats. It is a 15-month CD which is what gets them around the FDIC cap. They have a 0-Star rating. And to make it worse, they are located in Florida. But they are FDIC insured.
Franklin Synergy Bank has a 1.95%, also for 15-mos. They are out of Franklin, TN. They have a 2-star rating.
Use the FDIC or NCUA website to do your own safety check. Take a look at the various ratios. Look for a capital ratio above 7%, a total risk based capital above 10% (only applicable to banks), and if the institution has a loss, make sure it is only about 25% of the capital when you adjust for yearly earnings. Going cheap to Seattle Or cheap to Argentina can be a serious blast if you know a few tips and tricks and of course plan out some of your trip ahead of time. Take Seattle for example. You can easily go spend an entire day down at the Pike Place Market and never once get even close to being bored. The Pike Place Market is a multi level (I think 4 levels if memory serves me right) complex of really super interesting shops and curios, street performers and fish markets, restaurants and espresso shops. There is literally something for everyone.
Then, in my personal opinion if one wants to go cheap to Seattle there are likely no better cheap eats (food) than at the Three Sisters Bakery in the Pike Place Market. They have constantly been ranked as the best sandwich in Seattle for I don’t know, maybe 10 years now! No kidding they really are that good. I have had sandwiches in country’s from Russia to Argentina and never had better. And no I don’t own stock in the place.
From the market it’s just a hop, skip and a jump to the Ferry terminal where for just a few bucks (if you’re into walking and don’t take your car) you can go island hoping to 6 or 8 Islands all in one day. You simply buy the multi stop pass or whatever they call it now and walk on to the ferry. you can then get off on any of the islands that they make their stops at. It’s a complete blast that costs less than a lot of bad times I’ve had that’s for sure. And if you’re up for it you can get the multi day pass and hop Islands for a few days spending the night at the ones you want to explore a little further.
Argentina has my favorite backpackers paradise in the whole world, and her name is Patagonia! Oh my word what an amazing place. To be in the middle of such awe inspiring beauty is absolutely just indescribable at best. Never have I seen such diversity in nature coupled with a few towns that are as different as milk toast and rocket fuel. You honestly feel like you just got off the plane in Switzerland or Austria not South America.
Now, so how do you do this place on the cheap? Simple, like I said it’s a backpackers Utopia so you get out into nature and see things I will bet you never saw before not even on all the Natural channels and programs on TV. This place is the Disneyland of the outdoors. It will blow your mind, all I can say is… Better bring a camera.
